My name is Sean Stetson and I have loved hockey for as long as I can remember. I grew up on the South Shore of Boston Massachusetts and I moved out to Utah in 2016 and it was the best decision I ever made.
I fell in love with the mountains, the culture, and the people. You could say I got lost in those mountains for a while, but eventually I found my way. Utah is my home and I love it here, but have always felt like this place was missing more sports.
Obviously Utah has sports with the Utah Jazz who are beyond beloved and then with football well that’s a whole other story. The in-state rivalry with Brigham Young University and Utah will always be a thing that is around and it will always have some of my favorite memories.
I married into a beautiful and loving BYU/Utah family. I am 1-0 in the only Utah vs BYU football game I have been apart of. Also I loving bringing that up whenever I can.
Again this is a whole different story. I’m just painting a small picture of the sports in this state and how we need more.
This brings me to what this blog will be about and that is hockey.
I first started this journey of wanting to be a sports journalist at Salt Lake Community College in January of 2022. My only plan was to get a degree in journalism and wait for sports to get here. Little did I realize that they would get here before I got that degree.
The NHL beat me by two weeks!
I am writing this blog the night before my graduation for Salt Lake Community College. The Arizona Coyotes move to Utah became official on April 18.
Over the course of my time here in Utah I have been fascinated with people’s variety of teams they rooted for in hockey.
It’s easy for me to say I’m a Boston Bruins fan because I was born into it, molded by it (Bane voice). I found out that there are so many sports fans that live here that are desperately waiting for more.
I’ve met many Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Knights fans because geographically those areas are closest to Utah so it makes sense. Then you get the random fans of the San Jose Sharks, Los Angeles Kings, or other transplant teams like the Vancouver Canucks.
It’s time for Utah to start their own hockey legacy.
If you’ve read this far then you want hockey just as much as I do if not more!
I hope that you’ll follow along as we figure all this out together. First big date in the upcoming Utah franchise is May 7, 2024 which is the NHL Draft Lottery and Utah is positioned to have a possible top 10 draft pick.
Also going on record that I think the Utah Blizzard or Utah Venom would be my picks for the team name.
